For my last summer adventure, I traveled to Oswego, NY. Growing up swimming in the crystalline oceans of Hawaii, makes me a tad skeptical when entering lakes. However, Lake Ontario may have changed my perception.
I have always been hesitate about swimming in lakes. I swam in lakes before, but never liked the idea of not seeing what was below my feet. Seeing beautiful photos of the area, I thought Lake Ontario was worth a try. So, we went to Fair Haven Beach State Park. My perception immediately changed once seeing the cool, crystal clear waters surrounding the beach.
A specified portion of the lake is sectioned off for swimmers. This section may be shallow, but it’s just enough to cool down adults and is the perfect depth for kids. The sandy shores were lined with beach goers of every age. Either basking in the late August sun, playing beach volleyball, enjoying picnics beneath the trees, or grabbing goodies from the snack stand.
Splashing around in the water for an hour or so called for a sweet treat. Upon entering the snack stand, I was introduced to the most tastiest discovery, Perry’s Ice Cream. I’m being straightforward in saying that Perry’s chocolate chip cookie dough ice cream is the best ever – my daughter definitely agrees as well. Once grabbing our snacks, we took a stroll down the dock to take in more scenic views. We watched sail boats come and go and fishermen reel in the catch of the day.
One of the reasons for coming to Oswego is for Lake Ontario’s salmon. Being a popular place for salmon fishing and previously sampling the speciality fish, I was eager to try more. Rudy’s Lakeside Drive-In has the perfect seafood fix. With over half of the menu consisting of different seafood dishes, you are sure to find your favorite pescetarian meal. Rather than just choosing one item, we had a little bit of everything. And for dessert, more Perry’s chocolate chip cookie dough ice cream. Rudy’s sits right along Lake Ontario, making skipping stones a necessary post-meal activity. If you’re not so good at skipping stones, like myself and my daughter, dipping your toes in the water, taking in the view and admiring the colorful stones are also great past time activities.
Biased thoughts have prevented me from partaking in more lake related activities. It is safe to say that Lake Ontario has set me free of those preconceived ideas. With beautiful waters, scenic views and delicious seafood, what’s not to love? Next summer, I’ll be sure to revisit my new found vacation spot!
